Review: MSR Trail Mini Solo Cook Set

I need to get this out first, there are ultralight hikers who have 9lb packs. I am not one of them. That does not mean I don’t enjoy a light pack, but I also enjoy comfort and products that don’t wear out after 2 uses. If you have been riding this site, last year I got what I think is one of the most innovative backpacking/bikepacking products in a long time; the MSR Pocket Rock Rocket. I got the Pocket Rocket Deluxe kit which includes a 1.2L pot, bowl, cup and strainer. Now that it is warmer I wanted to show you how great the MSR Trail Mini is for getting your kit lighter without losing anything but weight.

The kit weights just 203g (7.2oz) and includes a .75L pot, 16 bowl, strainer lid and pot lifter.

You can fit the Pocket Rocket and fuel canister inside the kit when stowing it in your pack.

One of my favorite small details is the clear bowl with measurements marked in it.

If you need to pair your already light Pocket Rocket down for the summer look no further than the Trail Mini Solo Cook Kit. I use this kit in warm weather and switch to the deluxe kit in the winter so I can boil a full 32oz for my Nalgenes.

The size of a large mug, the Trail Mini Solo Cook Set delivers the essentials you need to fuel up—all in a cook kit that’s ridiculously small in your pack. Perfectly sized to make hot water for one pouch meal or a generous cup of coffee, its pot plays double duty as your eat-and-drink vessel. Inside, it nests a PocketRocket® 2 stove and 4 oz. MSR fuel canister. Outside, its bowl efficiently adds a second vessel, making this the ultimate space-maximizing cook set for solo minimalists moving fast with a small pack.
