Review: MSR PocketRocket Deluxe Stove Kit

Some products are revolutionary, the MSR PocketRocket Deluxe Stove Kit is one of those things. How is an ultralight stove revolutionary? The PocketRocket Deluxe stove is a game changer in that it weighs nothing and has an integrated piezo igniter. Once you use this, you will never want to use your old stove again. The Kit takes it a step further combining everything you need in a light packable system.

The kit includes the MSR PocketRocket Deluxe stove, ultralight aluminum 1.2L pot with grip, pot lifter, cup, strainer lid and stuff sack. All of this nests together including room for either a 8oz or 4oz fuel canister.

About a decade ago I picked up a MSR Windburner stove and have used the heck out of it since. This packs a bit smaller and still allows you to boil a full Nalgene. If you, like me use a Nalgene full of boiling water as a foot warmer, the 1.2L pot is clutch. The deluxe kit includes the MSR Trail Mini Duo Cook Set, which has the larger 1.2L pot and 28oz bowl. I’ve been using this so much the past few months that I also picked up the 1 person Trail Mini Solo Cook kit for summer trips when I don’t need to melt snow or boil a full liter.

Seriously, look how incredibly easy it is to light the PocketRocket Deluxe, and notice there is no large flame or frantic lighter flicking involved.

The PocketRocket has very stable arms that fold out to support all sizes of pots.

The 28oz bowl has super easy to read gradient marks for measuring out just the right amount of water.

The strainer lid works wonders for pouring water back into your bottles. The grabber holds the strainer in place quite well.

It all packs together in this neat bundle.

So how does it work? It boils a Nalgene of warm water in just a few minutes.

With ice cold water assume a bit more, but still super quick. This stove is an absolute dream, you should buy it, it just makes using a stove a joy. No more hunting for your lighter or taking up lots of room in your backpack. The MSR PocketRocket Deluxe Stove Kit fits in a seat bag with plenty of room to spare. Heck you can get the solo kit to extend the use for light solo trips. I love this stove, you will too.

Our premium stove kit takes ultralight adventures up a notch with deluxe features that enhance your cooking experience on the trail. Sized for two but light enough for one, the kit comes equipped with MSR’s pressure-regulated, fast-boiling PocketRocket® Deluxe stove that perfectly nests in the kit’s ultra-compact Trail Mini™ Duo Cook Set. Ultralight backpackers and minimalist bikepackers alike will appreciate the stove’s push-start ignition, consistently fast boil times (even when fuel and temperatures are low), and broad burner for more versatile cooking and simmering. The 1.2 L pot is the ideal capacity for boiling water for two pouch meals or cups of coffee, while the included bowl adds a second eating/drinking vessel for sharing with a trail partner.

  1. Thanks for the review! I recently met up with some friends in the Big Bend (Texas) area this fall. Several had this stove for camping and river trips and really liked it.

One thing, though, it has no wind screen. Have you felt the need for one at any time?
