Review: Oveja Negra Portero Backpack

Sometimes I use something so much it never even occurs to me to write a review. Over a year ago I bought an Oveja Negra Portero Backpack. I’ve hiked so many miles in this bag through snow and sun and I just love it. The first thing you are asking is “a backpack from this bikepacking company?” Yup, and it is awesome.

The Portero is a roll top bag that expands from 16-22 liters, perfect for a day hike or bumming around town. What I like most about the roll top bags that O.N. makes is the velcro which keeps the roll top neat when closing the bag up. Other bags get all cockeyed or require extra straps. This just works. They have this velcro feature on their hip pack as well.

There is a large main pocket with a sleeve for a laptop or bladder.

The front features a decent sized slash pocket, I store a windbreaker and camera battery in there.

And the outside has 4 compression straps with pockets that fit Kleen Kanteens or small Nalgenes. They are not elastic, so they will not fit a full size Nalgene. I love having quick access to an insulated bottle in the summer.

The back panel is padded and the shoulder straps are likewise padded.

I was not kidding, I have used this bag all year, in snow, sun and everything in between. It also still looks brand new. You should get one. Handmade in Colorado by nice people for a very good price. What more do you need to know? Pick one up.
