One of the things I absolutely love about Moab is that we have the blazing hot desert and the La Sal Mountains right at the edge of town. Which offers up great alpine adventures in the winter and a break from the heat in the summer. I was looking over an old Canyon Country Publications map and it showed two lakes above treeline in Gold Basin that I figured would make a good hike. And it did, but on that hike I noticed plenty of snowed in couloirs. So I went back two days later with axe and crampons and it was spectacular. You should totally do this.
Although I did not take a pic (I don’t know, it felt wrong for me to take the pic) you pass a memorial to 4 back country skiers who died in an avalanche. So if you try this in winter be careful. Check out the Utah Avalanche Center.
How rad is it that we have both extremes in Moab? Pretty rad I say.
