Trip Report: Bikepacking Owl Canyon/Yellow Cat

There was a big part of the map in the north east of Moab above the River Road and below I-70 that I never explored. This trip around Owl Canyon, Yellowcat(aka Yellowjacket) and Kokopelli was a blast to do for a one nighter. A one nighter that could be turned in to as long as you want. The roads go on forever.

You park about a mile past Dewey Bridge at at the Kokopelli sign on the left. I drove up the road to the fork of Owl Canyon and Kokopelli and left my Jeep for the day. It starts out a bit bleak, you may wonder what you got into. After the first climb it becomes a fun rolling canyon ride until you reach some old miners cabins.

After that you’ll climb a bit more as the road gets a bit tighter. After a fun decent and a climb you bear left and drop down some slickrock to a… well a sandy road to Cave Springs.

Now you have a choice, keep climbing up or head back and go across some sand to a fun slickrock area with a cool climb to the top of a mesa.

On this mesa it gets tricky. You will turn left back in towards the mesa. Don’t follow the cow track down into the wash… I did, it was not fun.

I camped on the edge of the mesa and had a great night and good food.

The next day I rode back around the mesa, up Yellow Jacket a bit and then back down Kokopelli. It was a blast! There is no water at all, but for a S24O you can carry all the water you need.
