Review: Salewa Ortles Tirolwool Hybrid Jacket

In the winter staying warm while not sweating is a constant struggle. If you are anything like me you are creating a ton of heat on the ascent and then freezing on the descent. The Salewa Ortles Tirolwool(TWR) Hyrbid jacket does a really good job at managing this situation. It is windproof, water resistant, packable, has an insulated hood and breathable.

One of my favorite features is the hood and collar combo. It is well insulated and provides tons of coverage which means you can opt for a light buff instead of a heavy neck.

The Ortles TWR Hybrid has insulation on the back, front, sides and arms down to the bicep. The arms are made out of a tough breathable material so you won’t end up with duct tape patches all over the coat.

The coat is a bit snugger of a fit compared to the other Salewa Ortles Down Jacket  I have. I’d suggest you go up a size. I’m 5’10” 150 pds and needed a large in this and a medium in the Down Jacket.

The jacket has two pockets at the waist, a chest pocket and inside pocket. The inside pocket doubles as a stuff sack, making this something you should always pack on long cold days in the mountains.

If you need a coat for cold days in the mountains that can breath well and will keep  you warm on the uphills and downhills then go for the Salewa Ortles Hybrid TWR jacket.
Stop-and-go activities, such as ski mountaineering, alpine mountaineering or climbing are all about climate control. Periods of intense physical activity are often followed by static periods where you risk overcooling. Our thermo-regulating Ortles Hybrid TirolWool® Celliant® Jacket is designed to meet the specific insulation needs of different areas of the body during high-octane activities in cold conditions, while its tough Durastretch inserts make it ideal for rugged alpine use. Hybrid design meets hybrid insulation – TirolWool® Celliant® is our proprietary lightweight, insulation material that combines innovative polyester fibres enhanced with thermo-reactive minerals and wool sourced from Tirolean sheep. Heat emitted by the body is absorbed and converted into infrared radiation, which is stored and reflected back to the body – keeping you warmer for longer. TirolWool® Celliant® is water resistant, breathable and will still keep you warm when wet. The tailored, rear-adjustable insulated hood provides extra protection. And with its small pack size, this jacket stows easily in any pack and fits under any hardshell.
