Backpacking RMNP Ypsilon Lake in Winter/Early Spring

I love RMNP and take every chance I can get to go there. But with three dogs that is not very often. So this past weekend I had the chance to go backpacking. You maya think “But Joe, this is April it’s not winter.” Well it is winter in Rocky Mountain National Park still. The weather forecast called for 1 foor of new snow. So I packed up and headed out.

Not too snowy at the start.

That changed.

By about 2.5 miles in there no tracks and it was a guessing game where the trail was. But I saw a cool rabbit.

The trail down to the lake was hard to follow. And at this point it was DUMPING snow. I turned around and went back up to the ridge and camped there.

It was getting cold fast so I had an early dinner. Man I love this MSR Windburner Stove.  Not only for making my dinner, I boiled up some snow and filled a nalgene to warm up my feet in the tent.

Same spot as the first pic the next morning.

A great trip and a perfect time of the year to go backpacking.
