If you have spent any time in the winter riding bikes you have been frustrated by cold ears. As we all know winter cycling caps don’t work in the cold. Winter caps slowly slide up leaving one ear freezing cold. Ski caps aren’t better they make your helmet fit weird and then you overheat while one ear slowly gets uncovered and freezes.
The folks at K2 made a new helmet this past winter that fixes all of those issues; the K2 Route. The K2 Route is interesting because it meets all bike specific ratings while also being a certified ski helmet. Is it the best winter helmet for cycling? Yes, without a doubt this is the best helmet for winter fat biking.
The K2 Route has integrated ear covers with vents, so you can still hear the world around you while keeping your ears warm. In fact it is so warm if it is above 10°F I don’t wear a hat with it.
There is ventilation to keep you from over heating on the climbs, but for those incredibly cold snowy days, it has an included cover to keep snow and wind out.
The snow cover fits on over the front and with a clip on the back. The cover also has little attachment points to clip it on your bag for quick access or stowing.
Adjustments are done with a BOA adjustment making fitting a breeze. I measured my head using their sizing chart and purchased online. The medium fit me perfectly.
The clips on the side of the helmet hold a headlamp perfectly or can be flipped over to hold your goggles on. You know what is cool? K2 includes extra clips in case they get lost and a handy bag to transport/store the Route.
I love this helmet, I am a bit mad at myself for waiting so long to pick it up. I tried on full on ski helmets, but they were too heavy and hot for riding. This is the perfect combo of warmth to weight.
