With that I have been using a great pair of mittens lately. The Hestra Army Leather Ski Mitts are pretty close to amazing. I have worn them mountain biking, hiking and mountaineering. They work great in all conditions. They do particularly well when you are flailing around in powder. With the wrist cuff and cord lock on the gauntlet no snow works it way in as you are post holing in snow.
The leather palm is fantastic for mountain biking, no fear of wearing through the palms. It works really well when scrambling over boulders too.
When trying the mitts on in the store I thought the elastic wrist bands or what Hestra calls handcuffs would be too hot and get sweaty. I was wrong, they are awesome! I can take the mitts off and adjust my gear or take a photo and not have to worry about the mittens falling in to the snow.
They have a removable liner that is a blend of fiberfill and qualofill. The liner has velcro on the edge and is easy to remove and insert back in to the mitten.
Sine the lining is removable you can dry them faster after a long day or throw in a different liner mitten to make it even warmer.
A great feature of all Hestra gloves and mitts is that they come in numbered sizes, not just small/medium/large but numbered sizes. Which is great because you actually get a glove that fits not something that is tight at the wrist and has tons of room at the fingers or vice versa.
