Review: Lezyne Mega Drive Light

This fall I picked up the Lezyne Super Drive XL light for riding at night. It is an amazing light in both brightness and build quality. But then I saw the Lezyne Mega Drive which has 1000 lumens. If 500 lumens was great, what would 1000 be like? Awesome is what it is like.

The Mega Drive is a small, self contained, light weight 1000 lumen light!  The case is made from machined aluminum, the light is super solid. The build quality is top notch. Riding with this light on the trail is amazing. It is like riding in the day.

There is a single button for the lights controls. It has 4 output modes, low mode (250 lumens), medium/enduro(500 lumens), high/blast (1000 lumens) along with a flash mode. The power button also indicates charge remaining. Much like the Super Drive XL it has a race mode, which switches between enduro and blast mode only.  I almost always use it in race mode. Switching down to enduro on the climbs I was getting 3 hours between charges. To enable race mode, hold the power button down for 10 seconds.

Although blast mode is said to last 1.5 hours, I routinely got closer to two hours between charging. The mounting clamp is a composite mount (one each for standard and oversized bars), the same as the super drive.

The Mega Drive never moved while on the trail, and this is on my rigid mountain bike on technical tails.  It is so nice that this light has an actual mount and not some rubber strap as found on so many others.

It charges using a standard USB cable in ~4 hours. The battery pack is removable, allowing you to carry spares.

Evidence of the over the top high quality construction, even the latch that holds the end cap on is made of machined aluminum.

Riding with this 1000 lumen light changes night riding completely. You no longer have those blind spots around rocks and roots. It really begins to blur the line between night and day riding. The light at medium/enduro is still 500 lumens, this was so bright I often forgot I was not on high/blast. If I was riding with the fast crew, I’d wear the Super Drive XL on my helmet and have this on the bar. With that combo, literally I rode just as fast as during the day.

If you need a light for trail riding that is well made and super bright, pick up the Lezyne Mega Drive. With Lezyne’s build quality and 1000 lumen light output this is an amazing deal at the price.
