The Lezyne Super Drive XL is a new LED light from Lezyne. It is made out of machined aluminum with a single LED putting out 500 lumens for 1.5 hours, or 350 lumens for 2.5 hours. It has an economy mode of 175 lumens and a flashing mode as well.
One thing that made me pick up the Lezyne Super DriveXL is that fact that although it is a one piece light you can swap out batteries. The machined end cap unscrews to reveal a standard lithium ion battery (18650).
Speaking of batteries, it charges using a standard USB cable. The Super Drive XL uses a smart changing circuit that will quickly charge the first 90% of the battery then trickle charge the last ten percent. Your light will be at 90% charge in ~3 hours and the last 10% takes two hours. This is to maximize battery life.
The light comes with a bolt on handle bar mount for road and mountain bars. I really like this, for a few years there every light was coming with a rubber band to hold it on, you’d have to crank that rubber strap so tight to keep the light from rotating that you’d eventually tear the band. Not a problem with this Lezyne bold on mount.
The light has a nice beam perfect for trail riding. The Super Drive XL has a very cool feature called race mode. You can hold the button down for 10 seconds, then the light only toggles between 500 lumens and 350 lumens. I like this to stretch out the battery life by using 350 lumens on the uphills and with on click being at 500 lumes when descending.
The light comes in two packages, regular with a handle bar mount and the loaded which comes with a case, handle bar mount, helmet mount and extra battery. I got the loaded kit so I would have an extra battery and the helmet mount. I liked riding with it so much that I picked up the regular as well so I can ride with one with one on the bars and one on my helmet. I think this is the best combo for trail riding.
Having both lights, I can ride with one extra battery that will work in both. The battery comes with a little holder for transport as well.
I am really psyched on these lights. The build quality is really high and the lights are incredibly bright while also being small and self contained. They appear to my eye to be as bright as the MagicShine 900 lumen light I was riding with prior to this. So pick them up for mountain biking or commuting.
