Review: Mountain Khaki Granite Creek Convertible Pants

When I was perusing the Mountain Khaki website looking for a new pair of Alpine Utility Pants, I saw they made the Granite Creek pants in Convertible/Zip-Off style. I picked up a pair and let me say they are great!

I really love the regular Mountain Khaki Granite Creek pants for hiking and travel. I already reviewed them a bit ago here on the blog, so I was pretty psyched to check these out.

The Granite Creek Convertible Pants are made of a breathable brushed nylon that is water, uva/uvb and stain resistant.

When worn as pants, you don’t notice that these are zip-offs. With other cheaper zip-off pants the zippers and cut are just so odd that they make crappy pants and crappier shorts. Not the Mountain Khaki’s, these are almost indistinguishable from regular pants.
The construction is very heavy duty. All of the seams are triple stitched.
The double cuff  prevents wearing through at the heal. The pants are chock full of pockets, There is one cargo pocket.
Which opens up to reveal another inner zippered pocket.

The right side pocket  also has an extra zippered pocket, for keeping your keys, etc from getting lost.

The rear pocket is zippered as well. All of the pockets are made of mesh which helps with make the pants more breathable and if you get soaked water won’t collect in them.

Lets get to what is really important about these, the legs zip off and turn in to shorts.

Check out how each leg has a different color zipper, a little detail, but it is so nice when you are reattaching the pant legs. You know the drill, you are leaning against a tree with your shoe off, precariously balanced putting your pants legs back on only to discover you’ve got the wrong pant leg!

Although you wouldn’t have that problem at all with the MK pants. The pant legs have extra long side zips, letting you remove/attach the pant legs without taking your shoes off.

And they make nice shorts. The color I got was called “earth”. But I think it should have been called “Chocolate Lab”. But thats just me…

We were wearing matching browns.

Bottom Line
The  Mountain Khaki Granite Creek Convertible pants are great for hiking and travel. I have used my Granite Creek pants on impromptu mountain bike rides, bike commuting, hiking and backpacking. These have the added ability to convert to shorts which is great for backpacking or on those long day hikes that start out freezing until the sun warms you. The fit is really nice with a “gusseted” crotch and loose cut. They look nice enough to wear out to your after adventure dinner too. My Granite Creeks have been worn a ton of times and look no worse for wear. If you are looking for a really versatile pair of drawls pick these up.
