The rack has an impressive 75 pound weight limit. This is achieved through Jandd’s use of larger diameter tubes in the frame’s construction. They also added a third support strut and a larger deck on top. All of those features make this a very stable rack when loaded with camping gear or groceries.
Check out the junction of the tubes below, that is some serious welding.
I had previously owned a Jandd Standard Rear Rack on my commuter and used it for bike touring as well as carrying my laptop and clothes on the way to work daily and it served me well. The only reason I don’t still have it, is that I sold the bike it was on!
As you can see in this picture, the disc brake mount is right in the way of my braze on. Luckily Jandd offers a fix for the Cannondale’s design mistake.
The Jandd disc brake adapter is an aluminum spacer that moves the rack leg out far enough to clear your disc brake.
These pics are of a Jandd Mountain Pannier attached to the rack to give you an idea of the size of the rack.
There is plenty of room on the rack to attach your tent on the deck and not get in the way of attaching a pannier.
The large side supports on the rack keep your pannier from moving around while riding on rough terrain.
Bottom Line
The Jannd Expedition Rack is an exceptionally nice rear rack and a really good price. You can carry and attach an enormous amount of gear to this rack and it will not stress this rack. After trying a few other rack brands Jandd stands out as the best built rack available. The folks at Jandd clearly put a lot of thought in to this rack and it shows.
The rack comes with a lifetime warranty as well, but you won’t need it.
Jandd says:
The Expedition Rack is the rack of choice for cyclists who require exceptional durability and expanded size, measuring a full three inches longer than our standard rack. Built from 3/8″ 6061 aluminum stock, the Expedition Rack is intended to be used primarily with our Large Mountain and Expedition Panniers where additional rear clearance may be needed for large loads. However, the Expedition is also a good choice when more room is needed for carting the evenings firewood or portaging large containers of water. The secret to this racks tremendous strength is a third support strut which angles back 21 degrees from the main load bearing strut. In addition, the rear support strut offers a 6″ long section for attaching the lower portion of your panniers suspension system to enable precise positioning of your load. All stress points are double-welded.
