Review: Jandd Tozi Kletter Backpack

The Jandd Kletter Backpack is a medium size day pack packed with tons of features. This 37 liter(2200ci) bag is built with burly materials, features an array of lash tabs, and offers custom shoulder straps.

The Kletter back pack is based on a classic, time tested and simple design. It comprised of basically just one large main pocket with a small pocket on the top flap. But oh it is so much more…

The bag with the top flap opened up. A draw string keeps everything inside.

You can fit a ton of gear in that main compartment.

The bag has no shortage of attachment points, there are ice axe loops with lash tabs on the center of the pack. And more lash tabs on the top flap.

There are two four way attachment  points on the bottom of the pack for attaching even more.

The side of the pack has 4 spots for attaching gear, along with elastic cord for stashing your jacket or gloves quickly while hiking.

You can attach snowshoes or the Jandd Backpack Pocket to the bag with the side using the attachment points. Jandd sells accessory straps to use with it, I wish I had ordered some. I used some old webbing I had instead but I’ll order the straps from Jandd.

Jandd never stops thinking, the top pocket has the zipper on the top, so if you happen to forget to close it, what is inside is less likely to fall out. And like everything else on the Kletter, the zipper is super burly.

Jandd does something you just don’t see in other bags at this price range, the shoulder straps come in 4 sizes. When you order from Jandd.com you can specify what size straps you need. For perspective I order the medium straps, and I am 5’10” 148pds. Their Cloud 9 Shoulder Straps are cut anatomically and are very nicely padded.

The Kletter also has a 1/2″ padded foam back.

The Cloud 9 shoulder straps include a sternum strap and feature interchangeable attachments for things like D-rings or a hydration pack hose. The Cloud 9 shoulder straps are incredibly adjustable which let you dial in the perfect fit.

The waist belt on the Kletter is 1.5″ wide, making it bigger than what you find on most day packs. The wider strap make it much more comfortable as a result.

The bag features a double bottom of ballistics nylon so you won’t be wearing it out anytime soon. All of the materials used are top notch and so is the construction. Jandd uses tons of bartacks and quality hardware. You can tell this pack is built to last when you first shoulder the Kletter.

You can carry a ton of gear in this bag, it fits just as well fully loaded as when carrying just a few things. Here is another shot of it from the side for reference.

Bottom Line
The Jandd Kletter is perfect for day hikes in the winter, or carrying extra gear on long days in the summer. It’s classic design holds gear well and the plethora of attachment points makes carrying all the gear you need a snap. The Cloud 9 straps are comfortable and provide a great fit. Jandd uses quality materials and builds its gear to last. They stand behind that with a lifetime warranty, which you will never need to use anyhow!

  1. Hey Gram – I really like this pack. Its a classic design with some modern touches.

It has not shown one ounce of wear, and I have been using it a ton.

There are no water bottle pockets, but in the winter I carry nalgenes in the pack. In the summer I carry a smaller hydration pack, so its not a problem.

You'll love the pack, and it will last forever.

    Happy trails,
    -Joe

  2. I just got a "golden ticket" from Jandd (bought a bunch of panniers and racks for my summer pac coast bike tour). Might buy one get one free with this backpack. Your review really sold the backpack.

    thanks!

  3. I have actually done week long winter backpacking trips using this (It was a little bit overloaded but worked just fine) – not to mention weekend summer trips with no problem whatever. Great pack.

  4. Hey John – The pack is great! I recently moved across the country and unloaded almost all of my packs. This is one of the 2 I held on to.

    -Joe

  5. Just ordered a Tozi from Jandd because of your review, thanks. Your pictures were great and very helpful; Jandd really needs to update its website with more detailed pictures. Regardless, I've been a fan of Jandd bicycle gear for years, but this will be my first pack. I'm a big guy with wide shoulders, and I'm hoping that the Cloud 9 harness will prevent neck rub that I get with the dozens of other packs that I have tried on.
