Review: Marmot PreCip Jacket

Sometime last winter I purchased a Marmot PreCip jacket. In the scale of waterproof breathable jackets the PreCip is on the low end at $99. I purchased it on sale at Wilderness Voyageurs in Ohiopyle, PA for even less.

It is a lightweight waterproof breathable coat that actually keeps you dry. Oh how I have been let down time and again with jackets marketed as waterproof but they barely keep you dry in a mist. Ok enough intro. How does this jacket work? Really well. I used it today for 2 hours of hiking in the rain and stayed dry. The only place water came through was my forearms. But that was a long time in heavy rain.

You can see how well the water beads up on the coat.

The hood is big enough to wear a knit cap underneath, and kept my noggin dry the whole time.

And it features one of my favorite touches on a coat, pit zips.

It packs very small, so there is no reason not to carry it in your backpack. It has two large front pockets and that’s it. You have to move up to the next jacket in the Marmot line, the Oracle for more pockets and fleece lining around the collar. But for the money I can’t find a nicer jacket for hiking in the rain and snow. I have spent way more on jackets that did not keep me as dry.

Like I mentioned earlier, after 2 hours the forearms had soaked through and my arms were getting wet. But that is not bad for a $99 waterproof breathable coat. You can see here where the water was soaking in and no longer beading up.

During the hike I used my SealLine Urban Backpack which is totally waterproof. And I wore my 12 year old Montrail Moraine boots which I seal each year with Sno Seal, and I never get wet feet.

We hiked by the Cucumber Falls and then down by the Yough.

And this is what it looks like when you take a picture as you slam your camera on the ground while falling on your ass on a wet moss covered rock.

  1. Hey Matthew – There is no lining, and nothing really on the inside, not even an inner pocket.

I'll take some interior pics tonight.

Thanks for checking out the blog.
