Light and Motion Vega 200 Warranty Update

A few weeks ago my Light and Motion Vega 200 rubber strap broke. Light and Motion support sent me a new one when I contacted them and provided a proof of purchase.

But I say this is confusing, they would not warranty the strap without the receipt.  But why then does Light and Motion ask you to register your product online at this page: http://bikelightingsystem.com/support/register-your-light.html

I got a new part but was miffed that I had to dig up the receipt for a light that I had registered on line.
