Review: Shimano Winter Bike Shoes and other warm stuff…

I think I have established that I get cold hands and feet on the bike. I mean really cold hands and feet. Or I used to.

I think I am good on gloves, I use the Craft Tempest Gloves when its above 40.
When its below 40 and above 25 I wear Craft Split Finger (aka the lobster claw)
When its below 25 I wear straight up mountaineering mitts. I use some REI Primaloft mittens.

So for my feet, over the last few years I wore Sidetrak Shoe Covers (get them from Excel, my last pair lasted 10 years and were a hand-me-down from a buddy) over top of Diadora Chili Extreme winter mtn bike shoes.
These diadora shoes are really nice, they keep your feet warm, they have a gaiter built in to keep the snow/cold out and the warmth in. I actually have no complaints about the shoes. But they are starting to wear out, I do commute in them daily throughout the winter.

I probably could have gotten another winter out of them, but I happened on a crazy insane deal on Shimano Winter Bike shoes (SH-MW02). They were $50 at Conte’s in Ballston, VA.

They are a bit more substantial than the Diadora’s. They have a full leather/leatherlike substance except for the neoprene cuff at the top.

Apparently they are Gore Tex.

They have the same problems all shimano shoes have when used with Crank Bros pedals. You have to dremel away part of the lug by the cleat. The diadora’s didn’t have that problem.

They are pretty toasty I wore them on a 3 hour ride at French Creek State Park in 30 degree temps with no problems. I know you hard men out there wear shorts and short sleeves in the winter but not me….
