I commute through a city park and a college campus.
There are people on the trails, people with cell phones, dogs and iPods. So the ol “Hey mind if I pass” doesn’t always work. Actually it almost never works.
I have been using a bell. The bell most of the time is met with suprise and a smile. First because they think it is a 6 year old girl coming at them, and then by it being a grown ass man ringing a bell… It cuts through cell phones and iPods nicely.
But one in every 20 rings is met with anger. They yell, make some smart ass comment. Its weird. Its just an example of how you can never please everybody. And some people are just bitter mother fuckers.
I think I’ll keep using the bell. Most people smile.
I picked mine up from Velo Orange, it comes on a 10mm headset spacer so it does not get in the way at all.
