Review: Therm-A-Rest Hyperion 32° Bag

Humankind has made marvelous advances in the last hundred years; we’ve gone to the moon, have super computers in our pockets and Thermarest made the Hyperion 32° Sleeping Bag. It might sound like a bit of hyperbole, but I stand by this statement. This bag which is about the same volume as a Nalgene can keep you warm down to freezing. This might be the perfect three season bag.

Is this how you show the size of a sleeping bag, not a sleeping bag model.

You may be inclined to think a bag that packs down so small would be too small to sleep comfortably in. However the 900 Fill Nikwax Hydrophobic Down insulation compresses an astonishing amount. As a side sleeper I am more than comfy in the Hyperion. For sizing’s sake I am 5’10” and 155lbs and I sleep like a bug in the proverbial rug in this. The bag saves weight in ways you have to go out of your way to notice. By that I mean the changes go unnoticed in use, only on the scale. For instance they shave weight using a lighter zipper than you would find on a traditional bag. It also uses light and removable straps to attach it to your sleeping pad. These little changes go unnoticed while in use. In fact I actually prefer the removable pad straps(Therm-A-Rest calls them Synergy Links) as compared to the larger ones found on my Thermarest Antares and Altair bags. Worth noting, I got the Antares about a decade ago and it was a game changer for me. I had never used down bags before and now I can’t imagine not using it. Also if this bag is like my other Therm-A-Rest products, it will last forever.

The Hyperion has a spacious mummy hood and generous foot box. The mummy hood has a draw string to retain warmth on really cold nights.

Now keep in mind that this ultralight bag is rated to freezing. If the temps at night are going to be pushing the edge or below you will want to bring a puffy or insulated pants to layer in. I assumed everyone does that, but I thought it worth mentioning. On a recent 45° night I had to unzip the bag all the way because it was just that warm. Therm-A-Rest includes a storage bag and a compression stuff sack.

If you need a light weight bag for shoulder season you really should consider getting the Hyperion 32° bag from Therm-A-Rest. This and the Neoair Uberlite fit easily into the seat bag of your bikepacking rig.

Seriously the Hyperion is worth every penny and you need it if you are saving weight and space in your pack without sacrificing comfort or quality.
