Review: Spanninga SPXba Fender Mounted Tail Light

I have fenders on the commuter, and I have a dream. A simple dream to have a 1950s style integrated lighting built in to the fenders of my bike. It does not really seem like any one is doing that anymore.

Hey NAHBS guys – add that to you list for next year, I’ll make the lights if you make the enclosure. Maybe Bruce Gordon could do it, he makes awesome stuff.

I was in Minneapolis in January for Sourcefire (I’m a bit of a nerd) training and stopped in Hiawatha Cyclery on the the way the airport. Amazing store. They had a bunch of neat lights, bags, other commuter things. They had 3 built up Rawland bikes. They are cool looking cheaper frames. I would get one as a commuter or rigid mtn bike.

In their very comprehensive light collection they had the Spanninga SPXba Fender Mounted Tail light. While its not shaped like a 1950s rocket engine, it still is fender mounted so I picked it up.
It is very light weight, has a small, non blinking LED and mounts to the fender with one bolt and one nub.
It is mounted straight on here, my reflective tape is a bit crooked
Well I just don’t think its that bright… it is not as bright as a Knog Frog .
And it has nothing on a planet bike super flash.

I really like the fender mount of it though. So I think I’ll gut it and put some of my own LEDs in there.

So in the end, I’d say:
– Skip the Spanninga SPXba light, its not very bright nor does it look like a 1950s rocket
– Stop in Hiawatha if you are in Minneapolis, its a cool store.
