Review: Patagonia Neck Gaiter

So its that time of year again where you have to layer up before hitting the trail. I used to swear by the balaclava for winter riding when the temperature drops. But a few years ago I switched to using a Patagonia Neck Gaiter.

The problem with a balaclava is that it is a pain to pull up and down over your nose/face with gloves on.  The best part of a gaiter/hat combo is just how easy it is to regulate your temperature and keep your face warm. When you are out riding or hiking this thing is great.

It is amazing how much warmer a neck gaiter can keep you. I like the Patagonia gaiter as it stands up to repeated washings and is easy to wear with a helmet. Stay away from “windblock” gaiters because the windrpoof layer makes it too difficult to breath through.

Patagonia says:

The fuzzy, ultrawarm Neck Gaiter preserves your heat when the temperature falls faster than the flakes. It features two layers of plush 4.6-oz microdenier polyester fleece (87% recycled) to seal out penetrating wind and cold. The clean, lightweight design stuffs easily into a jacket pocket. Tube construction reduces chafing from seams. Recyclable through the Common Threads Recycling Program.

  1. I have a Columbia one, but I am completely sold on the Neck Gaiter form factor as well. I find my balaclava too warm in basically any conditions. The gaiter also works well to cover only neck, neck plus chin, neck plus chin plus mouth, or neck plus chin plus mouth plus nose. I guess you could cover your eyes with it, but I wouldn't recommend it.

I do wonder how the Columbia/Patagonia gaiters compare.
