Review: Therm-a-Rest NeoAir XTherm

It’s no secret I am a fan of Therm-a-Rest gear. I have had a Therm-a-Rest Ultralight pad for 24 years now and last year I picked up a Therm-a-Rest Antares 20°F sleeping bag which is just amazing. But I had heard that the newer pads packed smaller, insulated better and were more comfortable. I have been using the Therm-a-Rest NeoAir XTherm for a few months now and this thing is rad! The NeoAir XTherm is a comfortable, warm, packable, lightweight and made in the USA sleeping pad.

The first thing I want to talk about is how small this packs down. On the left is the old Ultralight, the middle the NeoAir XTherm and the right is a Nalgene.

But if it packs so small can it be comfortable? Yes, it is over twice as think as the old Ultralight.

This extra thickness of the NeoAir XTherm increases the insulation and comfort. I have used it this fall in Colorado above 10,000′ multiple times. Each time I have slept warmer and better than ever before. And a good nights sleep really can make the trip better.

The NeoAir XTherm has a grippy texture which keeps your sleeping bag from sliding off. It also includes a stuff sack and patch kit. The stuff sack can be used to inflate the NeoAir XTherm. I actually found it easier to just blow it up the old fashioned way with my lungs. But I could see how the inflation bag would really help out if you were suffering at higher altitudes. The NeoAir XTherm is also really to pack in to the stuff sack. Just let the air out and fold it in to thirds.

This is really a great piece of gear to make your nights in the tent better than ever. The dogs get to sleep on the old Ultralight now!

If this was paired with Therm-a-Rest’s Altair 0°F bag you’d have an incredibly small, light weight winter kit.

The XTherm air mattress delivers, by far, the greatest warmth-to-weight ratio available in any air mattress, allowing you to go lighter than ever in winter conditions. Patent-pending ThermaCapture™ Radiant Heat Technology gives the XTherm™ air mattress true four-season warmth without the weight or bulk usually found in a winter-worthy mattress. The result is a mattress that weighs less than a pound, takes up about the same space as your water bottle, and provides serious comfort in extremely cold conditions. Pump sack and repair kit included.
