Bikepacking Hey Joe Canyon

I am not sure why I didn’t post this, but this has to rank as one of my favorite trips. There are so many variations to this route, some folks packraft, make a loop, out and back, whatever floats your boat. I did this trip in early February and the conditions were amazing. Frozen ice flowed down the Green River and the sun baked walls of the canyon made it down right warm out.

You start with a descent down Spring Canyon that is… steep.

When you hit the bottom you realize you’ll have to climb all the way back up that later, but it is beautiful, so the pain won’t be so bad. You then ride a jeep road for about 9 miles to the Hey Joe Mine. In February there were cows all along the path, so the track was just torn up and without a fat bike it would have been rough.

This is something I rarely do, but it got so incredibly cold I made a fire.

You can read all about this in various sites and books. I find the classic “Above and Beyond Slickrock” a good one, as well as the Fun Treks 4×4 guide. You can make this an out and back, loop or float. The possibilities are endless in the desert!
